Extraordinary Photos From Ordinary Places

A challenge I took on recently was to find seemingly normal situations and places and find a way to photograph them in a special or unique way. The two locations I found right off the bat were right outside my front door and in the living room where my wife was working. For inside, I wanted to take a really high-key and almost ethereal looking portrait of my wife Emily. I hung up a white sheet and used some creative lighting to get this effect:

For outside, I waited until it was sunset and then used a really shallow depth of field to make it sort of dreamy and mysterious. Here are the before and after results:
